  • Listened to a pod yesterday which was broadly about health but also listed a number of ways in which the modern lifestyle is sub optimal for the way our bodies have evolved. She mentioned some of the below and I added a few from other podcasts I remember with Huberman and others.

    • Sleep - wake at sunrise, sleep two hours after sunset (electrification ~2 to 3 generations ago)

    • Food - fast a lot, avoid highly processed foods. Eat whole foods - many raw foods are "neutered" to remove enzymes that our bodies have evolved to expect - as a result our digestive systems/microbiomes are out of whack. Mass produced, highly processed food: ~2 generations

    • Social - switch from small-group, tight-knit, in-real-life socialising to large-group, loose connection, always on, digital socializing (social media). Focus on nuclear family - move out at 20, hyper-isolated dwellings, removal of unscheduled leisure time: ~2 generations

    • Stressors - hyper-connectedness, time spent outside, exposure to "wide horizon" settings that are calming to eye/nervous system

    • Other - Endocrine disrupting chemicals in everything that cause tons of health, fertility issues: 2 generations.

  • The guest said she feels really sorry for her 20 year old daughter who has to deal with a plethora of issues that she never had to think about, and likely doesn't realise. For example, in the author's generation it was totally unheard of for women to not have a cycle, and now she regularly comes across women in their 20s, 30s, 40s that don't have a menstrual cycle.

  • Thinking

  • It is insane how drastically the modern lifestyle has transformed in just the last two to three generations.

  • Because humans are hyper adaptable we can cope with these changes, and because the changes have been incremental we haven't really noticed them en masse, but we're not thriving (in my opinion), and I would argue that it's significantly harder to thrive in today's society versus one or two generations ago - it's possible, but it would require holding views and behaviours which are on the extreme fringes and socially isolating. Even that word "thriving" today means largely "living independently/individually, making money, commanding respect"

  • One positive is that despite us being in a sub-optimal era in the above ways, we are in a great era for both having access to information and access to resources to fix these things. So maybe this is just an unfortunate transition between a scarcity era and an abundance era where we haven't figured out how to use abundance to our collective flourishing yet.

  • Came across this video earlier and loved it - the idea that you can play an entire song with wraparound drums, while standing, seems like so much fun. If something like this (programmable drums with packages of effects for songs) existed as a product, I would buy it - I suppose that's kind of what beatsaber is.
